As hurricane season continues through November, PRoTechos is working to rebuild up to 3 vulnerable roofs for families most at risk, while training new apprentices in resilient carpentry. Every roof completed before the next storm means one more family with a safer shelter.
Nearly a decade after Hurricane Maria, thousands of families in Puerto Rico still live under blue tarps or in homes weakened by storm damage, earthquakes, and years of deferred repairs - and every hurricane season raises the risk. The island also faces a shortage of skilled construction workers, slowing recovery for the communities that need it most.
PRoTechos' Learn and Serve program trains residents in carpentry and resilient roof construction while rebuilding real homes for families who cannot afford repairs on their own. This project will: (1) Rebuild up to 3 vulnerable roofs for families most at risk ahead of storm season; (2) Provide hands-on training in resilient construction techniques from experienced carpenters; (3) Equip graduates with employable skills to help close Puerto Rico's construction workforce shortage.
Each roof rebuilt provides lasting shelter for a family, while each trained participant strengthens the local workforce. Over time, this reduces housing vulnerability, expands employment opportunities, and builds a more resilient Puerto Rico - long after the project ends.
