The 2010 earthquake destroyed the public teaching hospital in Port-au-Prince. With the Haitian Ministry of Health, PIH/ZL is constructing a world-class, 320-bed teaching hospital in Mirebalais, Haiti.
Before the earthquake hit Haiti on 1/12/10, the town of Mirebalais was the hub of a catchment area with a population of more than 140,000 people. Due to its high-traffic location, an estimated 20,000 new residents have migrated to the area since the earthquake. This increase in population, combined with the fact that Hopital de l'Universite d'Etat d'Haiti--the central public teaching hospital in Haiti--was destroyed in the earthquake, requires a large-scale intervention in Mirebalais.
Following the earthquake, PIH and Zanmi Lasante, with the Haitian Ministry of Health, have expanded plans for a community hospital into plans for a national referral and teaching hospital. PIH/ZL broke ground on the hospital in fall 2010.
Construction is already underway, and by 1/12/12, Mirebalais Hospital plans to be serving patients and training the next generation of health care leaders in Haiti. The hospital will have 320 beds & serve approximately 450-550 patients per day.
