Because of political strikes and the blockade of trucks bringing goods from India, Nepal has been suffering from a fuel shortage. Partners in Nepal are only now able to conduct the surveys needed to begin construction.
Mohan Raj Bhatt, Hope for Nepal's project manager, says, "The rebuilding project is getting delayed due to the fuel shortage. Traveling has been a major problem. Things are very costly! We are hoping that this situation will end soon."
As the situation improves, Hope for Nepal will begin construction of 20 homes in March, and finish before the rains start.
The initial plan was to build over a wider region, but will now concentrate efforts in one area. Homes will be built in one of the severely affected villages near the epicenter of April's devastating earthquake. The quake killed thousands of people and left many more without homes. Help has not reached these areas, and people are exposed and vulnerable. They are also in need of clothing and blankets, as most relief has not reached this place. We will bring hygiene kits and other aid as well.
Even with construction complete, the work of recovery from the quake will not finish soon - it will take years. Our goal is not only to rebuild homes but also to rebuild lives. Members of the construction team completed a Tributaries International mental health seminar last August, equipping them with basic skills for counseling and understanding the effects of stress and trauma. More community workers from the quake-affected area will receive mental health and trauma training later this year.
THANK YOU for your generous support of rebuilding efforts in Nepal! We will continue to send updates as construction of the new homes gets underway.
