Domestic violence is a serious problem in Rwanda. We will teach the community domestic violence's root causes, effects and consequences through theater to change behaviors.
Achieving a Better Life plans to help social problems of domestic violence that affect Rwandan communities. Root causes of violence against women include: ignorance, drunkenness, polygamy, forced marriage and men not viewing women as equals or respecting women's rights. According to our recent survey in Kicukiro sector, domestic violence is common (physical affects 60% of women and psychological affects 40%). 60% of women and girls are severely overworked, which produces broken families.
Each month ABL plays a theater in 5 different sectors of Kigali, followed by a community discussion. Theaters address gender equality; girls and women's rights; intervention and helping others; domestic violence laws; ways to solve family conflicts.
The project will promote the value of women in society, reduce oppression of women and achieve the society where families are rebuilt to sustain peace. We aim to see domestic violence decrease by 50% as compared to initial surveys in our communities.
