Thank you for supporting the School-Based Health Alliance (formerly known as the National Assembly on School-Based Health Care). We are excited to share how we’ve spent our summer and our upcoming plans.
Highlights of the 2013 National School-Based Health Care Convention
School-Based Health Alliance: Redefining Health for Kids and Teens
We officially rebranded as the School-Based Health Alliance at the June 2013 convention. The new brand reflects our work with local, state, and national partners and the vital role school-based health centers (SBHCs) play in the lives of children and adolescents.
Advocacy Day
Convention participants converged on Capitol Hill for 2013’s Advocacy Day. Advocates and delegates made more than 140 visits to Congressional offices – our most successful Advocacy Day yet!
The day started off with an energetic rally. Speakers included the School-Based Health Alliance’s Youth Advisory Council members, David Esquith from the Department of Education, Ingrid Donato from the Department of Health and Human Services, and Congressman Joe Courtney of New London, Connecticut.
Advocates pressed for inclusion of funding for SBHCs in the fiscal year 2014 budget and the reauthorization of the SBHC program in federal law. After Advocacy Day, California Representative Lois Capps introduced the School-Based Health Centers Reauthorization Act (H.R. 2632) that would provide federal funding for SBHCs across the country. We must keep the momentum going, so ask your representative to cosponsor Rep. Capps’ bill.
The 2013 Convention Youth Track
The Youth Track at our annual convention gives students the opportunity to learn about the health and policy issues that affect SBHCs across the nation. This year, youth from all over the country participated in a series of workshops that refined their leadership and advocacy skills. The workshops sessions focused on health care reform and how it will affect the lives of young people across the nation, the establishment of youth advisory boards in SBHCs, youth empowerment through video production, and media literacy which led to the creation of a short video on the importance of SBHCs.
The 2010-2011 National Census Report of School-Based Health Centers
We released the 2010-2011 National Census Report of School-Based Health Centers during the 2013 convention. The latest report indicates that SBHCs are adapting to the changing landscape of the health care system. Download the full report from our website to learn more about how SBHCs across the nation are early adopters of health care reform.
