New School, Bigger Impact

By ADEYANJU OLALEKAN | Program Officer

Dear Supporters,

Thank you for believing in the power of young people to protect our planet.

This quarter has been one of our biggest milestones yet. What began as a single environmental club at Florence Court International School is now growing into a wider movement. During World Environment Day 2026, we took another exciting step in growing the Greener Minds movement by expanding the Greener Minds Club to Fonop Academy. Building on the momentum from our previous expansion, this milestone brings practical climate education, environmental leadership opportunities, and hands-on conservation activities to even more young people, strengthening our vision of creating a network of student climate champions across Ekiti State.

With every new school we onboard, we move closer to our vision of building a network of student climate champions across Ekiti State.

In commemoration of World Environment Day 2026, themed "Inspired by Nature, For Climate, For Future," our Greener Minds Club Organised Kick for Planet 2026, a charity football match that used sport as a platform to engage young people in climate action, environmental responsibility, and youth leadership. The event brought together Approximately 262 participants including students, educators, parents, government representatives, environmental agencies, development partners, and community members.

This quarter also marked the official launch of our Greener Minds 250 Trees Initiative, a long-term commitment to restoring green spaces while helping students understand that caring for the environment goes beyond planting trees; it means nurturing them until they flourish.

Working alongside the Ekiti State Forestry Commission, The Club members distributed the first 113 seedlings across Eight (8) schools while signing post-planting agreements that ensure every school takes responsibility for monitoring and caring for the trees.

Beyond the match itself, the day was full of youth voices: climate awareness talks from Greener Minds Club members, a drama presentation, cheerleading performances, and a reflection session from the club's Pioneer President. 38 certificates were awarded to players, club members, and coordinators, and four outstanding Greener Minds Club members were specially recognised for their commitment to tree care.

The event was made even more meaningful by the presence and support of relevant stakeholders, including the Ekiti State Ministry of Education, National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), the Ekiti State Forestry Commission and the Ekiti State Ministry of Environment

Impact at a Glance

  • Launch of TGED Foundation's Greener Mind 250 Tree Planting Initiative.
  • 113 tree seedlings were distributed during the first phase to 7 secondary schools and 1 primary school, representing almost 45% of the 250-tree target. The seedlings distributed includes Parkia biglobosa, Gmelina arborea, Terminalia ivorensis, Magnifera indica, Artocarpus heterophyllus
  • Eight (8) Tree Planting Agreements signed with beneficiary schools to ensure post-planting monitoring, accountability, and sustainability.
  • Approximately 262 participants directly engaged, including students, educators, parents, government representatives, environmental agencies, development partners, and community members.
  • Four outstanding Greener Minds Club members received special recognition awards and medals for their exceptional service and dedication to environmental advocacy.
  • Award presented to the pioneer president of the Greener Minds Club
  • 1 certificate of appreciation was given to the club coordinator for her mentorship and support in nurturing young environmental leaders.
  • 38 certificates, medals, and recognition awards presented to students, volunteers, club members, and coordinators in recognition of outstanding environmental leadership and participation.

What Was Donated

Thanks to you, this quarter's giving went directly into trees, tools, and recognition for the young people driving this work:

  • 113 tree seedlings distributed across 7 schools, facilitated in partnership with the Ekiti State Forestry Commission:
  • St. Augustine's Comprehensive High School, Oye-Ekiti - 20 seedlings
  • Ado Grammar School - 20 seedlings
  • CAC Comprehensive High School - 18 seedlings
  • Ifaki Grammar School, Ifaki-Ekiti - 20 seedlings
  • Divine Touch International School - 5 seedlings
  • Florence Court International School (Primary & Secondary) - 20 seedlings
  • Fonop Academy - 10 seedlings
  • 1 watering can and 2 pairs of protective gloves donated to the Greener Minds Club at Florence Court International School, to support ongoing tree care and clean-up of overgrown areas

Every seedling went out with a plan attached: each partner school agreed to submit periodic progress reports to TGED Foundation on growth and survival, so your donation keeps being accountable long after planting day.

Kick for Planet 2026 showed us that sport can be a doorway into climate leadership, not just for the players on the pitch, but for every student, teacher, and parent who watched a football match become a platform for environmental action.

What's Next?

With your continued support, we plan to:

  • Monitor the 113 newly planted seedlings against the signed school agreements
  • Formalise feedback and mentorship support for the Greener Minds Club members recognised at the event
  • Begin early planning for an expanded edition of Kick for Planet
  • Deepen partnerships with the Ekiti State Forestry Commission, NESREA, and GADEF

Our goal is clear: build a generation that understands climate issues and acts consistently to address them.

Your Support Creates Real Change

Here's what your contribution makes possible:

  • $10 - Plants 5 trees to green 1 school yard
  • $20 - Builds a 'Do Not Litter' signpost for one school, a daily reminder to keep the campus clean
  • $50 - Trains 5 teachers to guide hundreds of students on climate action across 2 schools, creating more young sustainability champions
  • $70 - Supports the construction of a waste sorting bin in one school and funds one workshop session on recycling and waste sorting
  • $100 - Supports a student-led event such as an in-school talk, recycling drive, or clean-up day

Each donation helps us move one more school closer to becoming a hub of environmental leadership.

Because of you, Kick for Planet was never just a football match, it was 262 people choosing to show up for the planet.

Thank you for helping us expand environmental literacy, leadership, and hope across Ekiti State.

With sincere appreciation,

The TGED Foundation Team
