See what we have been able to do with the much we raised.
On the 25th October, we set out to Iworoko Community High School, Iworoko Road, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Nigeria to raise awareness about the environmental impacts of plastic waste and the importance of environmental sustainability. We started with workshop led by a facilitator from TGED Foundation and took the students through the importance of environmental sustainability, waste management and waste recycling. The students listened with arrow-point attention. As we drew the often unseen connections between their indiscriminate waste disposal habits and the environmental hazards that come with it.
We proceeded into the waste-to-wealth session where we tested the creativity of a few of the students. We planned to create a christmas tree from plastic bottles and a bouquet of nylon flowers. The students helped with cleaning, cutting bottles and nylon into shapes, and assembling them into different patterns.
Throughout the waste-to-wealth session, the students were filled with joy and enthusiasm from the news skills they are learning. They were happy about what they were doing. When the final products were ready, they were very proud of their creations.
A student happily remarked,
"I never thought we could make something so beautiful from waste. It’s amazing to see this waste turned into something that can bring joy to others."
In this spirit, many students promised to create their own version of the Christmas Tree and Flower Bouquet from waste plastics and nylon when they got home.
Similarly, on the same day, we visited Aduralere Model High School, Iworoko, Ekiti State, Nigeria. About 50 students participated in the programme. Like it was experienced at Iworoko High School, the students listened with rapt attention. They were enthusiastic about the waste-to-wealth session and they actively participated in it.
For the two schools, over 100 students learned about environmental sustinability and waste recycling.
