The "10 de julio" human settlement, the communal kitchen "Madres Trabajadoras" and Habitable wants to build a multipurpose Community Center where a communal kitchen, a meeting room and a library for their children can function together. Since the crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the neighbors organized themselves in a communal kitchen to collectively cover the food needs of their 64 families. Currently, they carry out weekly tasks of leveling the land in order to build their community hub.
The "10 de julio" human settlement is located on the top of a hillside, in Lima. It houses 64 families living under poverty and extreme poverty conditions. Due to a lack of economic resources and adequate cooking conditions, they encounter numerous challenges in securing daily meals. Therefore, since the covid pandemic, they initiated a communal kitchen to provide affordable meals for their families. However, they still lack of a secure place to continue with care work and held other activities.
Through the process of collectively designing the space, the project offers an optimal place for the female members of the communal kitchen to conduct food preparation and storage. This will reduce the community's anemia rates and respiratory disseases due to inhalation of wood-fire gases. The project includes a flexible and high-quality space for meetings, daily dinners, and workshops that will bring tools that contribute to enhacing the community's capacities, especially women and children.
Continuing with the communal kitchen is self-recognized as a collective strategy to reduce the costs of family food, specially since the intensification of the food crisis, contributing to their long term food security. The project also represents a crucial milestone in the Neighborhood Consolidation Plan, a long-term process of social self-production of habitat essential for requesting the local government's installation of public services. This will strengthened their self-sustainability.
