In Colombia, only 39% of graduates access higher education, largely because public school students score nearly 30 points lower on the Saber 11 exam, which tests critical thinking, math, and reading. MAKAIA's STEM Talents Incubator builds these very skills-graduating 636 youth so far. As a result, 55% gained the competencies needed to pursue vocational training or postsecondary studies, breaking barriers to opportunity.
In Colombia, access to higher education is deeply unequal. Only 23% of students from the lowest income quintile enroll, compared to more than 60% in the wealthiest quintile. These inequities reflect systemic barriers-such as poor preparation in public schools, limited financial resources, and lower performance on admission exams-that leave vulnerable youth with far fewer opportunities to continue their studies and build professional futures.
MAKAIA's STEM Talents Incubator equips vulnerable youth with the very skills tested in admission exams and needed for higher education: critical thinking, math reasoning, reading comprehension, and life skills. Through project-based learning, mentorship, and digital tools, students gain confidence and practical competencies. To date, 636 youth have graduated, and 55% acquired the skills to enroll in vocational or postsecondary studies, breaking cycles of exclusion.
By equipping vulnerable youth with STEM and life skills, this project creates pathways to higher education, vocational training, and better employment opportunities. Over time, graduates can access stable careers, reduce poverty, and contribute to local innovation. Strengthening equity in education not only transforms individual futures but also fosters community resilience and economic development, breaking intergenerational cycles of exclusion.
