This project will help children in Mongolia with spastic cerebral palsy, a condition that can make every step difficult because of severe muscle stiffness, access life-changing surgical care. By providing a pediatric operating table and anesthesia machine, we can equip the operating room to safely perform selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) and other complex pediatric procedures.
In the U.S., we picture childhood through milestones like riding a tricycle, running across playgrounds, or chasing friends. In Mongolia, children may ride horses as young as 2 or 4, sometimes even before walking. Imagine a child with spastic cerebral palsy, longing to run, play, or ride a horse, but struggling to take a few steps. Spasticity can limit mobility, independence, school participation, and childhood joys. A child's dreams should never be limited by their community's access to care.
Selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) reduces abnormal nerve signals causing severe muscle stiffness, helping children gain comfort, mobility, and independence. Safe surgery requires pediatric-appropriate anesthesia and operating-room equipment. This project will help provide a pediatric-capable operating table and anesthesia machine for $20,000, enabling Mongolian surgical teams to perform SDR safely, near home, for children who might otherwise go without specialized care, and give hope to families.
This project will create lasting pediatric surgical capacity in Mongolia, enabling safe SDR and other complex procedures for decades to come. What begins as two essential pieces of equipment can ultimately give a child greater freedom to walk, learn, play, participate, and imagine a future shaped by possibility rather than by severe spasticity.
