In many communities across Nigeria, older adults living with dementia and other special care needs are often misunderstood because of limited awareness and cultural misconceptions. Instead of receiving proper medical and compassionate care, many are isolated, or subjected to harmful practices after their condition is mistaken for spiritual attacks or witchcraft. Through this project, we aim to protect dignity, improve quality of life, and reduce stigma for individuals with special care needs.
Nigeria's ageing population is growing, yet dementia remains widely misunderstood, especially in rural communities where memory loss is often linked to witchcraft or spiritual attacks instead of medical care. We have witnessed heartbreaking cases where older adults with dementia were taken to prayer houses rather than receiving healthcare support. Many vulnerable seniors continue to suffer neglect, unsafe treatment, and loss of dignity without intervention because families lack awareness.
Through this project, Raphe Adultcare Centre will: Provide safe residential care for older adults living with dementia and individuals with special care needs. Offer nutritious meals, daily support, and dignified living conditions. Train and support family caregivers with practical dementia care skills. Conduct community outreach and dementia awareness programs. Provide counselling and caregiver support groups. Connect families with trained care professionals. Promote compassionate care.
This project will create lasting change in how dementia, ageing, and caregiving are understood in underserved communities. It will replace stigma and harmful beliefs about dementia with dignity, compassion, and evidence-based care. Through residential support, caregiver training, and community education, families will gain knowledge to provide safer and more humane care. In its first year, it aims to support 50 older adults, train 100 caregivers, and reach 1,000 community members.
