Saphanet plans to set up poultry projects for poverty and hunger stricken women living in rural villages of Kenya. The women are so poor that they can not afford to sustain their widowed households. The project shall provide the women with income and nutritious meat and eggs. The women cannot afford to start up the projects on their own.
In the rural villages of western Kenya, there is increasing number of women headed households. These are as a result of losing their husbands to hiv aids. The women are so poor that they cannot afford to sustain themselves and the their orphaned children who have not been provided with the basic needs. Some of the children are malnourished.
The poultry project shall provide a way of generating income for the households. The project shall also enhance food security at a household level. The eggs and poultry meat shall provide cheap protein for the households. The poultry manure shall improve soil fertility for increased crop production hence reduce hunger.
The project shall assist the women with income and be able to expand in the capacity of the chicken until they are able to sustain themselves in the absence of Saphanet. The skills acquired shall be shared among other members of the community hence the capacity of the community to sustain themselves. The income earned shall be channeled to other investments to improve the economic status of 500 women and the entire community.
