Broome Street Academy is a unique public charter high school for NYC teens most at-risk of dropping out. All of our students come from low-income households and 34% are homeless/transitionally housed or involved in the child welfare system. Our mission is to provide committed academic guidance and support services they need to graduate high school and prepare for college or the workforce. As a new school, your support is vital to helping us grow to meet the needs of our growing student body.
Girls, in particular, are failing to graduate at alarmingly high rates, resulting in poor job prospects, low earnings, poor health, and reliance on public support. Nationwide, 1 in 4 female students will not graduate with a high school diploma in the standard, four-year period. When presented with additional challenges of homelessness, broken families, or dangerous communities, students are more likely to be held back, and less likely to graduate high school, go to college or secure a job.
BSA is a school unlike any other. All students receive individualized academic plans tailored to their needs and goals, and staff includes social workers, counselors and advisors equipped to handle the social and emotional needs they face. Housed within The Door (our partner and leading youth services agency), BSA further offers free health and mental health care, college prep, workforce development, and legal services, all under one-roof, to ensure students stay on the path to graduation.
A high school graduate has more options for success than a high school dropout. BSA helps students deal with immediate challenges in their lives while preparing them to move forward as graduates prepared to pursue college and careers that might otherwise have been out of reach.
