Kulika Uganda Project Progress Report: May- August 2026

1. Introduction
This report covers the period May to August 2026 and represents the seventeenth progress report since the project received funding in October 2020.
2. Training of Intern Students in briquette making at Kulika Training Centre
Asa Centre for practical learning,84 students, (42 females, 40 males), received training on selection and preparation of suitable raw materials, carbonization and preparation of carbonized materials, correct mixing ratios, correct use of briquette-making equipment, drying, storage and packaging of briquettes and basic marketing and business management skills.Theylearnt environmental benefits of briquettes, their potential contribution to reducing pressure on forests for wood energy and gained confidence in producing and using briquettes.
3. Adoption of briquettes
For Domestic Cooking
The use of briquettes for domestic cooking registered 18 new female-headed households; this cumulatively growing from 292 to 310 households.The Centre also registered two additional institutional clients, bringing the cumulative number to 14. The institutions have continued to use briquettes for cooking and brooding.
For Brooding Day-Old Chicks
The Way Forward Women’s Group (WFWG) registered four additional adopters, bringing total number of members using briquettes for brooding from six to 10. Similarly, the Kyanuna Women’s Group recorded eight additional adopters, increasing the cumulative number of adopters from 16 to 24 members. Kulika Training Centre also continued to use briquettes for brooding and providing practical demonstration that briquettes are reliable and cost-effective source of heat for brooding chicks.
4. Briquette Production and Marketing
During this period, the Centre produced and sold 1,630,000 kgs of briquettes. The income generated was used to continue promoting briquettes use to communities and learners.
5. New partnership for Community Extension
Alison Perry. a Women’s Health Researcher at Imperial College London came across Kulika Uganda’s briquette project through GlobalGiving website. In partnership with Alison, we sensitised and trained 12 rural women on women’s health and climate change and organized a market day to create awareness on briquettes as an alternative source of energy.
