What We Have Accomplished Together In 2016

TELONE WORKING ON THE VSAT DISH
TELONE WORKING ON THE VSAT DISH

This project is at the heart of our organization and is our strategy for bridging the digital divide that exists between rural and urban schools. More than 75% of Zimbabwe's 14 million population lives in the underserved rural areas where there is limited access to technology because development is disproportionately concentrated in urban areas. As a result, rural schools are faced with so many challenges. Teachers dont have the proper tools for teaching, classrooms are in disrepair, and the schools simply dont have the funds to buy computers. Lack of access to technology has created a digital divide between urban and rural schools which is severely disadvantaging a whole generation of youth growing up in the rural areas.

After high school, over 70% of rural students drop out of school because they dont have the funds to pursue higher education. Having computer skills would open doors of opportunity to these students who find themselves trapped in a vicious cycle of poverty as they are not able to continue their education and yet they are ill-prepared to enter the workforce. Unlike their counterparts, the urban youths who undergo computer training, rural youths have no opportunities to learn computer skills because such services are limited, or in most cases non-existent in the rural areas. Consequently, a student from the urban area with computer skills is more likely to find employment unlike his/her rural counterpart who ends up trapped in a vicious cycle of poverty.

The ultimate goal of this project is to provide a level playing field for the rural youth and put them in a better position to compete for jobs.

Update On Upgrading The Internet Service

The biggest accomplishment of this project was seeing our vision of "BRINGING THE INTERNET TO RURAL SCHOOLS" become a reality. On September 8, 2014 TELONE installed VSAT satelitte at Rimbi High School. We could not have done this without your help!
The VSAT package cost us $800 for installation and included 512 kbps speed and 20 gig data allowance at a monthly charge of $50.00. We are pleased to announce that the package has been upgraded to 1 meg kb bps speed, 60 gig data allowance at a monthly service charge of $136.00.

Here is what one of the students had to say about having internet access:

In His Own Words By One Of The Students At Rimbi High

"I thank you very much for providing our school with the internet. We have learned how to use google to search for information. This is very helpful for us since we are able to get information on any topic. I kindly ask you to continue to support this project so that we can get more computers. Thank you again for all your are doing to help our school.

Update On Laptops
Though this project is a big success, one of the challenges the teachers are faced with is limited access to computers. We are pleased to announce that we have finalized our agreement with a local company in Zimbabwe that offers a program for teachers to purchase laptops through monthly installments. Under this agreement, teachers can purchase laptops (dual cores) cash price, for  $370 or by credit for $492, at $41 per month for 12 months. The laptop specs are as follows : 500G HDD, 2G Ram, OS windows 8.1 or 7

As you can see we have accomplished a lot along the way—thanks for all your support!

Best Regards,

Thelma
