The kids at Carson Group Home come from low-income communities where they have faced devastating life challenges including poor nutrition, teen pregnancy, failing schools, violence, and substance abuse. Many of these kids have post traumatic stress, and few, if any, have positive coping mechanisms. Current funding constraints at Carson Group Home are stopping these kids from receiving the socio-emotional supports they need and want.
In December 2016, Carson Group Home contacted our organization asking for yoga classes for the kids living there -- these kids had specifically asked for yoga classes. We began this fundraising campaign in order to bring weekly to these students. Through time-tested meditation and relaxation techniques, our classes allow students to develop strategies for self-awareness, nonviolent communication, and positive conflict management.
Research shows that teens who take weekly yoga classes experience significant improvements in psychological health, increased constructive coping behaviors, and decreased symptoms of stress and post-traumatic stress. These results, which we have seen repeatedly over the past seven years, ultimately empower students to make healthy decisions for themselves and their communities. This, in turn, stops vicious cycles of generational violence, abuse, and poverty.
