Bring Safe Water to Munigi's Displaced Families

Project Report | Dec 29, 2025
Safe Water for Munigi's Displaced Families

By PASCAL NIYONZIMA | CORDINATOR

Munigi/Ngangi – North Kivu, DRC

1. Background and Rationale

The village of Munigi, in the Ngangi area of North Kivu, currently hosts 25,650 internally displaced people who have fled armed conflict. Most are women, children, and elderly persons. These families live without access to safe drinking water and are forced to walk long distances—often at night—to collect unsafe water.
This situation exposes them to serious waterborne diseases, sexual and gender-based violence, and deepens poverty, trauma, and loss of human dignity in an already war-affected region.

2. Problem Statement

  • Lack of nearby sources of safe drinking water
  • High prevalence of water-related diseases
  • Increased risk of assault and sexual violence, especially for women and girls
  • Loss of time and energy for water collection, limiting education and livelihoods

3. Project Objective

The main objective is to provide sustainable access to safe drinking water to 10,000 displaced people in Munigi, improving health, safety, and living conditions while restoring dignity.

4. Proposed Solution

The project will implement:

  • Drilling and installation of a deep borehole well
  • Equipping the well with a solar-powered system and a secure hand pump
  • Establishing a reliable water point close to homes and accessible to all

This solution will significantly reduce walking distances, security risks, and waterborne illnesses.

5. Beneficiaries

  • 10,000 direct beneficiaries, mainly:
    • Women
    • Children
    • Elderly people
  • The wider Munigi community will benefit indirectly through improved hygiene and social cohesion.

6. Expected Impact

  • Significant reduction in waterborne diseases
  • Lower risk of sexual and gender-based violence
  • Improved hygiene and community health
  • More time for children’s education and women’s empowerment
  • Strengthened resilience and foundations for local development

Safe water will become a cornerstone for recovery, peace, and hope in this displaced community.

7. Project Status

  • Total budget: USD 21,000
  • Funds raised to date: USD 0
  • The project is currently in the preparatory phase, including identification of technical and community stakeholders.
  • Project implementation is planned to begin in November 2025.

Through our collaboration with GlobalGiving, we are confident that the funding goal will be reached and that the project will be implemented transparently and effectively.

8. Partnership and Accountability

The partnership with GlobalGiving strengthens the project’s visibility, donor confidence, and compliance with international accountability standards. This collaboration is a strong guarantee of success.

9. Call to Donors

We make a sincere appeal to all donors, partners, and people of goodwill. Every contribution—no matter the size—can save lives, protect women, and restore dignity to thousands of children.
Together, we can turn access to clean water into a symbol of hope and renewal for Munigi.

10. Acknowledgements

We express our deep gratitude to all individuals and institutions who have already shown interest, trust, and humanitarian commitment. Your solidarity gives a voice and a future to those who have lost everything.
