On-ground casualty recorders get expert support

By Craig Grant | Operations Manager

In recent months, this project reached an important milestone by bringing together participants from across East Africa for an in-person training workshop, held in Kampala, Uganda

Over three days, participants worked side by side to strengthen how they document casualties in conflict. The training focused on practical skills such as protecting sensitive data, improving the accuracy and consistency of records, and using information to support advocacy efforts.

A key part of the workshop was the opportunity for participants to learn from others with extensive experience in documenting conflict-related harm, including ECC staff, board members, and experts from diverse regions from our Casualty Recorders Network. These sessions helped connect local efforts to wider global practice, showing how high-quality documentation can contribute to accountability and recognition for victims.

Just as importantly, the workshop created space for participants to share their own experiences. Through open discussion, they explored common challenges, exchanged ideas, and built stronger working relationships with one another.

Following the training, participants have continued developing their own documentation methodologies, with support to refine and strengthen their approaches. This ongoing work will help ensure that casualty recording is not only accurate, but also sustainable and locally led.

As the project moves into its next phase, there will be a growing focus on how these records can be used to advocate for change - helping ensure that the information gathered leads to greater awareness, accountability, and recognition for those affected by conflict.

Bringing people together in person was a powerful reminder that this work is not done in isolation. Strong relationships and trust are essential to documenting loss with care and credibility - and to ensuring that every life lost is properly recognised.
