From Occupation to Safety: Viktoriia's Story

By Bogdan Iaremchuk | Grant manager

Over the past months, the Save Ukraine team has continued rescuing children and young people from temporarily occupied territories and Russia. As of August 2026, we have rescued 486 children and young people this year alone. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Save Ukraine has helped bring 1,626 children and young people to safety, including 283 orphans and children deprived of parental care. Behind every number is a story of life under occupation, a difficult journey to safety, and recovery.

One of the most challenging areas of our work this year has been occupied Oleshky in the Kherson region. By late winter and spring, the humanitarian situation there had become critical: the town was effectively cut off from food and medicine supplies, surrounding roads were mined, and movement was constantly monitored by drones. At that time, estimates indicated that up to 2,000 civilians remained in Oleshky, including at least 47 children. Today, more than a thousand people are still believed to remain in the town, living under occupation and in constant danger. Save Ukraine continues to carry out rescue missions from Oleshky whenever possible, helping residents make the difficult journey to safety.

Viktoriia is one of those we were able to rescue. She was only 14 when she and her grandmother found themselves living under occupation in Oleshky. For the next four years, she did not see her mother and grew up surrounded by fear and isolation. One day, when Viktoriia ran to a nearby street, a drone carrying an explosive approached her. For about five minutes, it hovered directly above her. Viktoriia stood still and cried, afraid to move. Then, suddenly, the drone rose into the air and flew away. She ran home.

In the spring of 2026, with the help of Save Ukraine, Viktoriia was finally able to leave the occupied territory and reach Ukrainian-controlled territory. After four years under occupation, she can finally feel safer again. Today, Viktoriia is recovering at one of Save Ukraine’s Hope and Healing Centers, where she has a safe place to stay and everything she needs for daily life. When speaking about what her rescue means to her, Viktoriia puts it simply: “What I value most is that I got out. That I am alive.”

For Viktoriia, being able to live in Ukraine, go outside without the same fear, and think about her future again is the beginning of a new life. We sincerely thank everyone who supports this project. Your support enables Save Ukraine to continue difficult rescue missions for children living under occupation, help them make the journey to safety, and stand beside them after their return. Every successful rescue means another child has the chance to be safe, recover, and begin building a future again.
