By equipping our caregivers with specialized training in using music in elderly care, we can unlock new ways to communicate, soothe, and improve the quality of life of over 100 elderly people in residence with our institution who suffer from dementia and other cognitive challenges. This project will train 15 caregivers of which 4 caregivers will receive additional coaching hours to become trainers themselves and continue to spread their knowledge and expertise within the institution.
Imagine having lost the ability to understand words, trapped within the confines of dementia or cognitive degeneration. For over 100 of residents at Birgen di Rosario, the largest elderly care institution on Curacao, this is their daily reality. But there is hope! Music and sounds used at the right time in the care of elderly people have been scientifically proven to reach beyond the barriers of cognitive decline, bringing comfort, joy, and a renewed sense of connection.
By training our caregivers, Birgen di Rosario will help improve the quality of life for residents with dementia. Music stimulates parts of the brain that remain unaffected by the disease, evoking memories, emotions, and responses that words alone cannot. It can reduce agitation, improve mood, and even enhance cognitive function temporarily and provide a non-verbal form of communication that resonates deeply with individuals suffering from dementia and other cognitive challenges.
The project will train 15 caregivers through the "Music in Care" training course as well as provide additional coaching hours for 4 caregivers to become trainers. These new trainers will share their knowledge with other caregivers and thereby spreading the knowledge and expertise throughout the organization. By investing in this training, we not only improve the quality of life for our elderly residents but also create an opportunity for our caregivers to advance their careers.
