We are determined to continue our support for promising students from Roma communities who have the motivation but lack the means to go to university. The scholarships aim to encourage students to pursue degrees in high-impact careers such as pedagogy and medicine. We believe in the power of role models to inspire their peers and transform their communities. As an alternative to the negative portrayal of Roma, successful graduates help to undermine existing stereotypes among the broader public.
Less than 2.6% of Bulgaria's Roma have completed university. Scholarships have proven indispensable in helping young Roma access higher education. Over the years, TSA has provided more than 5 000 scholarships to high school and university students. We are now observing academic achievement hotspots - small towns and villages with tens of young Roma enrolling in university. Yet, we also see that this trend is extremely fragile, due to socio-economic barriers, discrimination and stigmatization.
Creating pathways for Roma to flourish on their professional journey by accessing higher education and good employment prospects helps ignite numerous sparks across vulnerable communities. These young people serve as an example that helps to undermine existing stereotypes among the broader public. They also motivate their peers and inspire and mentor the younger generations to dream, study and work for a better future that can be attainable for all.
While the impact that one university-graduating Roma has on their entire community is immense, education also transforms them into highly sought professionals in high-demand sectors. As often the first in their family to graduate from the university, they create a path to brighter futures for the next generations. Whether to complete school, aspire for a good career or go to university will never be a dilemma for the ones who come after them. And this is an investment worth making.
