This September Aaron Lipschutz will be running a half-marathon in Kenya to raise funds for the Faraja Cancer Support Trust. He cares deeply about their mission and he invites you to join.Children with cancer in Kenya's public hospitals experience prolonged admissions, often lasting 3 to 8 months. These extended hospital stays compounded by advanced illness, treatment side effects, and socioeconomic barriers result in major disruptions to their education, especially for those in primary school.
Children undergoing cancer treatment often face prolonged hospital stays, leading to: 1.Interrupted education, which hampers academic progress and self-esteem. 2. Emotional isolation, as they're separated from schoolmates and normal routines. 3. Developmental delays, due to lack of age-appropriate mental stimulation. 4.Increased anxiety, fear, and disengagement from learning environments. These gaps not only affect recovery but also the child's reintegration into school and community life.
Faraja Cancer Support Trust proposes a hospital-based learning programme tailored for children aged 6-12 who are undergoing cancer treatment. The initiative will deliver accessible, flexible, and inclusive education aligned to Kenya's national curriculum, facilitated through in-person supervision within paediatric wards. The first six months of the pilot will serve as a learning phase to guide next steps.
With consistent support, the programme can: 1.Boost treatment outcomes, by improving mental wellbeing and motivation 2.Ease school reintegration, thanks to sustained academic engagement 3.Empower caregivers and educators with models of hospital-based learning 4.Strengthen systemic recognition of holistic cancer care for children. "We're not just helping children survive-we're helping them thrive."
