Aaron Lipschutz is returning to Kenya to run a half-marathon and raise funds for Faraja Cancer Support Trust, following the success of his campaign last year. Many children who survive retinoblastoma in Kenya are left with the visible loss of an eye following treatment. Access to an ocular prosthesis is an important rehabilitative intervention that can reduce stigma.
For children who survive retinoblastoma in Kenya, the journey does not end when cancer treatment is complete. Many are left with the visible loss of an eye. This can become a source of stigma and low self-esteem, making reintegration into school and community life very difficult. Access to an ocular prosthesis is an important rehabilitative intervention that can reduce stigma and social isolation, while supporting confidence and reintegration into school and community life.
Faraja Cancer Support Trust proposes a prosthetic eye project tailored for children who have lost an eye due to cancer. The initiative will provide accessible and appropriate prosthetic eye care, helping children regain confidence, feel more comfortable with their appearance and improve their quality of life. The first six months of the pilot will serve as a learning phase, generating insights to guide the project's next steps and future scale-up.
With consistent support, the program can help restore confidence and dignity for children who have lost an eye to cancer, support their return to school and reintergration to community life.
