Each year, dozens of sixth-grade students take the most important step in their education: starting secondary school. For many Guatemalan families, that is where the path breaks off. At Ninos de Guatemala, 98% of our students make the transition, because we do not leave them alone. We support them with social-emotional care, academic adjustment, nutrition and working closely with parents to ensure that students receive the support they need to continue their studies.
Every year, sixth-grade students reach one of the most important steps in their education: starting secondary school. For many families in Guatemala, this is where schooling stops. The cost of secondary school, the distance to a school, and the pressure to bring in income can all push a young person out of the classroom at this stage. According to Universidad del Valle de Guatemala coverage for secondary school is only 71%.
Ninos de Guatemala does not leave students alone during this transition. We support them with social-emotional care, academic adjustment, and nutrition. We also work closely with parents so their children can keep studying. At Ninos de Guatemala 98% of our students transition to secondary school. Your donation helps finance a full scholarship of $2,500 for one student to cover their education and transition to secondary. Smaller gifts count toward that scholarship.
Our goal is for these students to continue their education beyond the transition to secondary school and finish their education with all the necessary tools to break the cycle of poverty.
