Pupils at Elwak Girls Primary School have a reason to smile. Eight (8) of their classrooms now have electricity and display boards. The display boards will soon be used to showcase their work and commercially produced teaching and learning aids.
This was made possible by your generous donations to our project; Bridge Educational Gaps for 100 Orphan Girls. Thank you.
The school allowed us to utilise the eight (8) classrooms for free to support the project. And since the intervention lessons takes place in the evenings, having a regular supply of electricity is crucial. The classrooms are used four (4) evenings a week by us for the project and the rest of the students at the school.
Most of the children attending Elwak Girls Primary School come from traditional Somali houses called 'herio'. Because of the nature of these houses and high level of poverty, most families cannot afford to install electricity in their houses. In addition, there are no proper tables or chairs that could be used for the purpose of studying.
Now that the school has a regular supply of electricity, large number of children who live closer to the school compound come to the school to study at night. Going to their own school in the evening to study was a godsend opportunity for most of the students. In the words of the head teacher Mrs Zainab Issack;
'We have witnessed a massive increase in interests to study amongst our pupils. Definitely installation of electricity is one of the major reasons. We are confident that in two years, our students will show an improvement in their examinations performance'.
The last three months, the intervention lessons have progressed well. Many of the supported girls have shown a remarkable improvement in their tests scores compared to non-beneficiaries. Their attitude and confidence levels have gone up. Their attendance of both remedial classes and regular school has improved.
The pupils now have benefit of having electricity at school and regular supply of free electricity at home. The solar lanterns has helped many of the participating families cut down the cost of fuel (they normally use Kerosene lamp as a source of lights at home) by using solar lanterns provided to the girls. This fantastic achievement was made possible by your generous donations and we thank you on behalf of the wonderful girls at Elwak primary school. As Maria Eitel of Nike Foundation said, "Girls' education isn't 'really nice'. It will change the course of history." We are confident with your support, we can change positively the live chances for these girls. Thank you.
