The Silent Tears Behind a School Uniform

By JACKSON AMEH | Project Leader

Some children return home every day with smiles for their parents and calm assurances that all is well at school. They dutifully complete their homework and put on their uniforms the next morning, even as they prepare to face the same environment where bullying, intimidation, or emotional abuse may be a painful reality.

Behind those brave smiles and quiet routines, many children are struggling more than they let on.

Not every child experiencing violence or distress bears visible injuries. More often, the signs show up as withdrawal, declining academic performance, increased anxiety, persistent fear, or a sudden loss of self-confidence. Tragically, those children who are most in need of help are sometimes the ones who are least likely to ask for it—suffering silently, hoping their pain will go unnoticed and unspoken.

And sometimes, the children who need help most are the ones who never ask for it.

Here in Makurdi, Benue State, GoGreen is dedicated to breaking this silence. Through our school-based awareness campaigns and a broader initiative focused on preventing bullying, gender-based violence, and emotional distress, we are working to create a new culture—one in which every child is seen, heard, and protected.

Our approach is multifaceted:

  • We aim to equip teachers to recognize warning signs of distress and respond with empathy and urgency.
  • We are working with schools to establish safe, confidential reporting pathways, so children feel secure in seeking support.
  • We strive to ensure vulnerable students are connected to essential psychosocial services, offering targeted assistance where it’s needed most.

Our project seeks to provide direct psychosocial support to 150 vulnerable students and to strengthen key protective systems in all participating schools.

But we cannot do this alone.

Your generosity can make a life-changing difference—helping a child who is struggling in silence and contributing to the creation of school environments where asking for help is always met with compassion, understanding, and meaningful action.

Please donate today. While you may never hear their silent cries, your kindness will ensure none go ignored. By standing with us, you’re standing up for the children who need it most, helping them find their voices and building a future where every child feels genuinely safe and supported at school.
