In Makurdi, the Benue State Capital in North Central Nigeria, schools have become battlefields where 80% of students endure bullying and violence, suffering in silence from GBV, PTSD, where depression thrive on systemic gaps and cultural stigma. This project will strengthen school safeguarding systems through teacher training and empowerment of students with life skills in conflict resolution and emotional balance and as well promote peer-led initiatives, improve reporting, and reduced stigma.
Bullying, GBV, and trauma-related mental health challenges are increasing concerns in Nigerian schools. In Makurdi LGA, school authorities record rising incidences of physical intimidation, sexual harassment, emotional abuse, and their resulting psychological impacts on adolescents that go unreported due to fear, stigma, and weak support systems. Many affected students develop PTSD symptoms such as anxiety, poor academic performance, withdrawal, and aggression and there is need to address this.
To provide a comprehensive school-based intervention that will strengthen safe, inclusive learning space by reducing bullying and GBV and improving students' mental health and resilience. The project will sensitize 3,500 students, train 100 teachers and counselors, and establish 20 peer-support clubs. It will also provide psychosocial support to 150 vulnerable students, promote awareness, strengthen reporting systems, and engage stakeholders to ensure sustainable child protection and wellbeing.
This initiative will break the cycle of violence in schools, create safe, inclusive, and violence-free schools in Makurdi, where students are protected from bullying and GBV. Will strengthen mental health, resilience, and academic performance among learners while building a generation of emotionally stable and socially responsible youth. It will also institutionalize child protection systems, improve teacher capacity, and foster sustained community and policy commitment to safe education space.
