A Child Should Never Be Afraid to Go to School

By JACKSON AMEH | Project Leader

Imagine waking up each morning knowing that the very place meant for your learning and growth could also be where you are humiliated, threatened, bullied, or abused. For far too many children in Makurdi, Benue State, this is not a distant worry—it’s part of their daily reality.

While some children worry about challenging examinations or completing homework, those who face bullying and violence worry about something much more fundamental: who might hurt them next. These students endure anxiety, shame, and fear simply for seeking an education—a right no child should have to fight for.

No child should have to endure this just to receive an education.

At GoGreen Environmental Health Sustainability Initiatives, we are committed to breaking this cycle. We have taken critical first steps, bringing vital conversations about bullying, gender-based violence, and emotional wellbeing directly into the schools and communities of Makurdi. By speaking openly, we’re helping to shine a light on experiences that, for too long, have remained hidden in silence.

But raising awareness is only the beginning. We are determined to enact meaningful, lasting change. Our goal is to:

  • Reach 3,500 students with essential knowledge about bullying prevention, gender-based violence, and emotional health.
  • Train 100 teachers and counselors to spot signs of distress, respond appropriately when a student confides in them, and create safe classroom environments.
  • Establish 20 peer-support clubs, empowering students themselves to be allies, upstanders, and sources of encouragement for their classmates.
  • Provide psychosocial support to 150 vulnerable students, ensuring that those in the greatest need are not left behind.

These children deserve classrooms filled with encouragement, support, and hope—not intimidation and pain. They deserve adults who recognize their struggles and act to protect them—never leaving a child to face fear alone. Every child deserves the confidence to speak up, knowing it will lead to help, not greater danger.

Your donation can help us turn fear into confidence and classrooms into havens of safety and belonging.

Please support our project on GlobalGiving today.

Because a child’s greatest fear at school should never be another human being.
