We are pleased to share our latest progress report for the project "Breaking the Chains of Commercial Sex in Ethiopia." Through this initiative, NODRO continues to support vulnerable women and girls who are at risk of or affected by commercial sexual exploitation by providing protection, rehabilitation, livelihood opportunities, psychosocial support, and pathways toward sustainable reintegration into society.

This project is designed to restore dignity, improve economic resilience, and create safe alternatives for women and girls through comprehensive, survivor-centered interventions.

During this reporting period, meaningful progress has been achieved despite ongoing economic challenges and increasing vulnerability among at-risk populations.

Project Overview

The Breaking the Chains of Commercial Sex in Ethiopia project seeks to reduce vulnerability to commercial sexual exploitation while promoting long-term social and economic empowerment.

The project focuses on:

• Identification and support of vulnerable women and girls
• Psychosocial counseling and trauma recovery services
• Vocational and entrepreneurship skills training
• Economic empowerment through livelihood opportunities
• Community awareness on gender-based violence and exploitation
• Reintegration and social inclusion support
• Strengthening protection networks and referral services

Key Challenges Addressed

The project addresses several critical challenges affecting vulnerable women and girls, including:

• Commercial sexual exploitation and trafficking
• Gender-based violence
• Poverty and unemployment
• Limited livelihood opportunities
• Social stigma and discrimination
• Lack of access to psychosocial and protection services
• Economic vulnerability among female-headed households

Key Achievements (April – July 2026)

During this reporting period, the project achieved the following:

• Supported 285 vulnerable women and girls through protection and rehabilitation services.
• Provided individual and group psychosocial counseling to 240 survivors.
• Trained 210 women and girls in vocational skills, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy.
• Assisted 145 participants to begin small income-generating activities through livelihood support.
• Conducted 18 community awareness sessions on preventing commercial sexual exploitation, child protection, and gender-based violence.
• Reached more than 3,800 community members through awareness campaigns promoting prevention, protection, and community responsibility.
• Strengthened referral pathways with local government offices, health facilities, legal aid providers, and community-based organizations.

Early Impact & Beneficiary Story

A New Beginning

A 24-year-old survivor from Addis Ababa shared:

"I believed I had no future and no way out. Through NODRO's counseling and vocational training, I regained confidence and learned tailoring skills. Today I earn an income, support myself with dignity, and have renewed hope for my future."

Her story reflects the resilience of many women who, with appropriate support and opportunities, are rebuilding their lives and contributing positively to their communities.

Observed Changes

The project has contributed to several positive outcomes:

• Increased self-confidence and emotional well-being among survivors.
• Improved access to dignified and sustainable livelihood opportunities.
• Greater financial independence for participating women.
• Reduced vulnerability to exploitation and abuse.
• Increased community awareness regarding the prevention of commercial sexual exploitation.
• Stronger collaboration among local protection actors.
• Improved reintegration of survivors into their families and communities.

Community Participation

Community ownership continues to be central to project implementation.

Key community contributions included:

• Community leaders supported identification of vulnerable women and girls.
• Women's associations participated in awareness and prevention activities.
• Religious and community leaders promoted protection messages.
• Local government institutions strengthened referral and response mechanisms.
• Survivors actively participated in peer-support groups and mentoring initiatives.
• Community volunteers assisted in awareness campaigns and follow-up activities.

This collaborative approach enhances sustainability and local accountability.

Challenges Encountered

Although the project has made encouraging progress, several challenges remain:

• Increasing economic hardship continues to expose more women and girls to exploitation.
• Persistent stigma discourages some survivors from seeking support.
• Limited financial resources restrict the number of beneficiaries who can receive livelihood assistance.
• High unemployment reduces reintegration opportunities.
• Growing demand for psychosocial services exceeds current capacity.

Response Measures

To address these challenges, NODRO has:

• Expanded outreach and awareness activities targeting high-risk communities.
• Strengthened psychosocial counseling and case management services.
• Increased collaboration with government protection offices and community stakeholders.
• Enhanced vocational training linked to local market opportunities.
• Mobilized additional partnerships and resources to expand economic empowerment activities.

Monitoring & Accountability

NODRO continues to ensure transparency, quality, and accountability through:

• Regular beneficiary follow-up visits.
• Individual case management and progress tracking.
• Psychosocial well-being assessments.
• Livelihood monitoring and business coaching.
• Community feedback and complaint mechanisms.
• Periodic project review meetings with stakeholders.

Current Key Performance Indicators

• 285 women and girls received protection and rehabilitation support.
• 240 survivors accessed psychosocial counseling services.
• 210 beneficiaries completed vocational and entrepreneurship training.
• 145 women initiated income-generating activities.
• 18 community awareness sessions conducted.

What's Next? (August – November 2026)

During the next implementation phase, NODRO plans to:

• Expand rehabilitation services to additional vulnerable women and girls.
• Increase vocational training and livelihood support opportunities.
• Strengthen survivor-led peer support groups.
• Enhance community awareness on prevention of commercial sexual exploitation.
• Expand partnerships with employers and vocational institutions.
• Strengthen monitoring, mentoring, and long-term reintegration support.
