Summary

Daraja Community Organization is breaking barriers to education for vulnerable secondary school students in Siaya County, Kenya. Poverty, hunger, inadequate school uniforms, and lack of menstrual hygiene supplies often prevent learners from attending and succeeding in school. This project will provide educational support, school feeding assistance, uniforms, and dignity kits for girls, helping students stay in school, improve academic performance, and build brighter futures.

Challenge

Many vulnerable secondary school students in Siaya County, Kenya, face significant barriers to education due to poverty. Families struggle to afford school fees, uniforms, and daily meals, leading to hunger, absenteeism, and poor performance. Adolescent girls are further affected by lack of menstrual hygiene supplies, causing missed classes and stigma. These challenges increase dropout risks and limit opportunities for education and future livelihoods.

Solution

This project will address barriers to secondary education in Siaya County by supporting vulnerable students with school feeding, uniforms, and menstrual hygiene supplies. School meals will reduce hunger and improve concentration, uniforms will promote dignity and equal participation, and dignity kits will ensure girls do not miss school during menstruation. This integrated support will improve attendance, retention, and academic performance, helping students complete their education.

Long-Term Impact

The project will improve access to quality secondary education for vulnerable students in Siaya. By reducing barriers such as hunger, lack of uniforms, and menstrual hygiene challenges, students will be more likely to attend school regularly and complete their studies. In the long term, this will increase literacy, skills development, employability among youth, reduce dropout rates, and contribute to breaking the cycle of poverty while strengthening community development and gender equality.
