There is a moment at the beginning of every school day at Matènwa that you never see.

Before the children settle into their classrooms, before the first lesson begins, before anyone opens a book, the cooks are already at work preparing breakfast.

And this year, something is different.

They know the food will be there.

Because of you.

A promise we can keep

On September 7, more than 350 children will return to Matènwa for the new school year.

Some will arrive excited to see their friends. Some will be nervous about a new teacher or a new grade. All of them will arrive ready for a new year of learning.

And for the children whose classes are supported by the Breakfast Club, there will be something waiting for them before that learning begins: a hot breakfast.

Your support has already made a remarkable start possible.

All three kindergarten classes are fully funded. Second grade is fully funded. And 67% of first grade is fully funded.

That means hundreds of children can begin the school year knowing that breakfast is part of their school day.

Why that matters

We often talk about breakfast in terms of nutrition or learning.

But there is something else worth recognizing: consistency matters.

A child shouldn’t have to wonder whether there will be food at school today.

A teacher shouldn’t have to wonder whether hunger will make it harder for a child to concentrate.

And the people preparing breakfast shouldn’t have to wonder whether they will have enough food to serve the children tomorrow.

The Breakfast Club changes that.

Your support gives Matènwa something enormously valuable: the ability to plan ahead.

Our cooks can prepare.
Our school can budget.
Our teachers can teach.
And children can begin their day with one less thing to worry about.

The work isn’t finished

We are proud of how far the Breakfast Club has come.

But we haven’t reached every classroom yet.

Grades 3 through 6 still need to be funded, and part of first grade remains to be covered.

That’s why the Breakfast Club continues to matter—as a community of people making a commitment to children, one classroom at a time.

There are many ways to help a child.

Sometimes we give something that changes a particular moment.

But there is something especially meaningful about giving something a child can count on day after day.

Breakfast is one of those things.

It is not glamorous. There is no big celebration when the bowls are filled.

The children simply sit down, eat, and get ready for school.
