African Angels is a non profit organisation that is disrupting the inequality that exists in today's South Africa. Focusing on providing educational opportunity to children 6 - 13 years at the African Angels Independent School, African Angels is now expanding its impact.
In partnership with the local Chintsa East community, the local municipality, another local non profit organisation, Friends of Chintsa, and a local business Express Petroluem, the Angels are implementing the Chintsa East Community Learning Centre. Right in the middle of the township.
The Chintsa East Community Learning Centre is a community located, container based, computer lab and book exchange in Chintsa East township. Chintsa East is a rural area on the East Coast of South Africa.
Chintsa East is a small seaside village, located in a semi-rural area some 41km from East London. It lies within the boundaries of the Great Kei Municipality, and demonstrates the economic disparity found so often in today’s South Africa.
On the sea facing side of the village are well built, large houses, tarred roads with street lights, well-maintained public spaces, beach access, shops, bars, and several locally owned tourism businesses.
On the ‘other’ side of the hill is the Chintsa East location, containing approximately 100 Government build houses, and over 325 shacks. Access roads are not tarred, there are no street lights, rubbish collection is ad hoc, there is one poorly functioning Government School, no health clinic, no police station, no social services, and over 17 illegal and legal shebeens. All of the residents in the location are of Xhosa (African) background. Employment is found as domestic workers, labourers, waitresses, chefs, housemaids/cleaners in local businesses. Some residents own and operate their own businesses, for example, a small shop, a tavern, or laundry.
The first phase of the centre will provide:
- the ability to access a computer and printer for CV development and job applications
- registration to school or university
- access to education, information and knowledge via sites like BookBoon, Khan Academy, Code School and Connect to Learn
- opportunities to participate in international technology events like 'Hour of Code' and 'Scratch Day'
- after school support and curriculum extension opportunities (particularly STEM)
- financial education and online banking
- personal development in communication, problem solving, learning and collaboration
- empowerment and access to the world outside of the limitations of poverty and hopelessness
- shared homework and meeting space.
