8 women and 6 men are murdered in South Africa every day. 62% of children grow up without a father in South Africa. Our aim is to change South Africa's current culture of violence and abuse, through long term, small group mentoring for vulnerable boys, helping them to grow into men who live the five honorable values - courage, kindness, self discipline, honesty and respect. Help us fight the effects of fatherlessness in our boys' lives.
67% of children grow up without a father in South Africa. Father Absence, Father Deficit, Father Hunger. Children with absent fathers consistently report feeling abandoned, struggle with their emotions, experience self-loathing, have difficulties with social adjustment, and are more likely to report problems with friendships, and manifest behavior problems. Children with absent fathers AND a lack of positive male role models, AND live in low income communities, feel these effect even more.
Our volunteer mentors will meet every week with the same group of boys. To achieve our goals, we focus on long-term mentoring and relationship building, instilling 5 specific values - courage, kindness, self-discipline, honesty and respect. Building a positive long term relationship with an adult, who themselves lives the 5 values, provides boys with positive male role models who they can aspire to emulate in adulthood.
We expect to our boys live the 5 values and influence other boys to do the same, reducing the levels of violence, alcohol and drug abuse, crime and harm in the community in which they boys live. We expect to see the boys' school marks improve, and see more boys finish school. We expect to see boys who attend our mentoring programme grow into better men. Better for themselves. Better for their families. Better for their communities. Better for the men and women of South Africa.
