Boxgirls Stand With Malala

Dear Friends of Boxgirls International,

We are proud to announce Boxgirls shared the story of Malala and activated directly around 500 children to join the Malala movement. In October and November 2015 Boxgirls organized three big events in Berlin to raise the awareness about girl’s education. Furthermore in frames of the “Stand with Malala” Program we encouraged schools and other educational institutions to run workshops in their schools and join the movement. Through events at schools, community centres and public events we were able to reach out directly to around 500 children who will share the story of Malala to their friends and families. In addition to the German project we run workshops with over 100 children in Afghanistan and South Africa. The paintings of girls and updates about our events have been followed on social media channels, where we’ve joined the “Stand #withMalala” campaign. Throughout the project, in only 7 weeks we managed to gather a lot of education and artistic materials that will help us promote the movement for girls’ education. 

Germany. Girls from disadvantaged neighbourhoods support Malala.

In October and November Boxgirls organized three big events in Berlin with primary and secondary school children. During the event in our partner school in Berlin children watched short movies about Malala and importance of girls’ education. They made drawings, some children wrote letters to Malala. Children took part in numerous activities and games like quiz that helped them to learn about Malala’s fight for girls’ rights to education. During the Malala event at a Girls’ Centre in Berlin the girls presented Malala’s speech and prepared their own performances about Malala and her incredible story. They also created an amazing picture book illustrating Malala’s life. 

Girls understand how important it is to have an access to education:

South Africa. Primary School Girls against Gender Based Violence.

Primary School girls in Khayelitsha, South Africa learned about Malala during a workshop on girls’s rights to education middle of November. One of the main goals of our South African Program Boxgirls Girls Leadership Education is to increase girls’ attendance in schools as well as their academic performance. Girls attend a Homework Club three times a week, where they work on improving their math and English skills. During the session girls made drawings illustrating their everyday school life and the importance of education in their lives. They also illustrated Malala’s story and the popular sentence of Malala Yousafzai — “One child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world”.

Afghanistan. Girls’ right to physical education.

Primary school girls in Afghanistan grow up with restrictions on movement due to religious, cultural and unsafe conditions. In November we worked together with Afghani Ministry of Education and the German Association for International Cooperation (GIZ) to create easily accessible programs and sports units for school girls. Girls in Afghanistan learned about Malala and made paintings about the importance of sports education in their lives.

Grant funds.

The Grant funds - 5000$ have been spent on materials (1000$) and events preparation (4000$).

Thanks to the Grant funding we were able to buy pens, acrylics, oil paints, pencils, different kinds of paper and cardboards, drinks and snacks for children (850$), textiles like bags, scarfs, theatre props (150$) that children used to create their paintings, print and copy children’s works and prepare theatre performances. We also used the materials to prepare education materials for schools and events.

Members of Boxgirls team, Ania, Caroline and Lisa with support of local partners, planed and coordinated events with schools, run activities with children, managed social media and communication, were responsible for documentation, reporting, obtaining all needed materials and coordinating development of education materials (4000$).

The Grant fund allowed us to prepare a manaual and education materials for workshops at schools that have been published on Boxgirls International Website in order to enable every school group in Germany to independently run workshops about Malala, inspire further children’s groups and contribute to the campaign.
