Imagine raising a child when you can’t afford food. Imagine having to choose between crippling debt and starvation.
In developed countries, pregnant women can expect check-ups, scans and consultations with doctors throughout their pregnancy. During labour they have access to pain relieving drugs and medical staff are on hand to talk them through the process and ensure that delivery is safe and successful.
In refugee camps, women are often alone, without even family to support them. The few medical facilities available do not have the capacity to reach them. In squalid conditions, lacking food water and basic sanitation these women are already struggling to live day by day. If they manage to survive childbirth they now must care for and feed a baby with very limited resources. Often they are forced to choose between crippling debt or starvation.
Designed for refugee mothers and babies, Global One’s Box for Life contain essential food and non-food items to last for 3 months. The boxes themselves double as cots for the babies to sleep in. Over the past months, Global One, along with its local partner URDA, has distributed 226 boxes for mothers and newborns. To ensure the sustainability of our project we have also delivered training in midwifery and sewing reusable nappies.
Our project has now come to a close and our deliveries were a success! We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all our donors and supporters.
While we may have finished this project, we are continuing to support female refugees around the world. Stay tuned to our Global Giving page to stay up to date on current and future projects.
