Sometimes, the most important lessons begin with something as simple as the ground beneath our feet.
As part of Elephants for Africa Environmental Education Club, students spent time exploring soil and the important role it plays in keeping our environment healthy. What may have looked like ordinary soil became an opportunity for the children to discover how closely connected people, plants and animals really are.
Together, they explored the four main components of soil; organic matter, minerals, air and water. They also learned about different types of soil, including sandy, clay and loam soil. Through discussion and exploration, they began to understand that soil is much more than just “dirt”; it is a vital part of the ecosystems around them. Additionally, they discovered that soil supports life in many different ways. It helps us grow plants and produce food, provides homes for animals, supports buildings and stores water. They were encouraged to think about how many aspects of their own lives depend on healthy soil, even when they may not notice it.
These seemingly simple discoveries are important steps in developing a deeper connection with the natural world. By teaching children about the environment around them, we help them recognise its value and understand why it needs to be protected. For our Environmental Education Club students, the goal is not simply to teach children facts about nature. It is to nurture curiosity, appreciation and a sense of responsibility, helping them grow into young people who understand that they have a role to play in caring for the land, plants and animals that share their home.
Every seed of knowledge planted today has the potential to grow into a future environmental steward. And sometimes, that journey begins by simply looking down and discovering the living world beneath our feet. Thank you for helping us plant the seeds of curiosity and environmental responsibility in our children. We are greatful to have you on this journey with us.
