Many children in Mitchells Plain in South Africa have never owned a book before. We believe that book ownership can ignite a love for reading. Children who love to read, will excel at school and go on to become constructive members of society. It all starts with reading!
Children in Mitchells Plain grow up with many challenges - they come from homes without books, their schools do not have libraries, crime and gangsterism is very high, they are too afraid to go to public libraries and they are not isnpired to read. There are 45 public primary schools in Mitchells Plain. On average there are 40 learners in each class.
READ to RISE hopes to inspire children to read. We want to visit every Grade 2 and 3 class in MItchells Plain and have a fun, interactive session with them to inspire them to read.... to rise despite their circumstances. We believe that book ownership will ignite a love of reading so give each child a brand new book to take home and share with their brother, sisters and friends. The books we use in our programme are inspirational, high quality, brightly illustrated with a positive life lesson.
For only $3, we can give a new book to a learner. The children will be inspired to read and share the books with their siblings and friends. We believe that children who love to read, will excel at school and go on to become constructive members of society. Parents and teachers can read the book with their children. We have book covering sessions for the public to come and cover books in plastic for the children. We also get volunteers to join us at the schools to read to the children.
