Books for Lebanon promotes childhood literacy and addresses the economic crisis that is currently crippling Lebanon. Given the spike in inflation, buying textbooks and stationery can be a huge burden on families across Lebanon. Thus, the project aims at providing equal access to quality education for students in Lebanon through distributing free textbooks and literacy resources before the start of the academic year 2021-2022.
Lebanon has been lurching from one crisis to the next: protests, COVID-19, the explosion at Beirut's port. In the background all along has been a grinding economic collapse. Pegged for decades at 1,500 to the dollar, the Lebanese pound is currently valued at around 17,000 to the dollar on the black market, and the minimum wage that stands at 675,000LBP = $40 puts most of the population below the poverty line. In such conditions, buying textbooks is often a huge burden on Lebanese families.
Books for Lebanon aims at providing equal access to quality education for students in Lebanon through distributing free textbooks and literacy resources to students. The $55,000 we are raising will allow us to distribute free textbooks and stationery to each student in 20 classrooms across Lebanon.
This project will help children to significantly improve their literacy, complete school and be set on a trajectory for success. The students of today will become pillars of support for their parents, community and country. Your support will help them grow into responsible citizens, leaders, and changemakers.
