Summary

Poverty and high cost of books have been identified as reasons for the poor reading culture in public secondary schools across Nigeria. This project is critical to bridging the gap. It will create and monitor book clubs in 100 public secondary schools in Nigeria, providing them with a rich supply of books. It will impact about 10,000 pupils from low-income families across Nigeria by improving their critical thinking and reading skills and consequently improving their socio-economic prospects.

Challenge

The reading culture amongst public secondary school pupils in Nigeria is deficient due to poverty, high cost of books and poorly equipped libraries. Poor reading culture disproportionately affects pupils from low-income families. This has led to poor academic performance, reduction in their emotional intelligence and consequently affected their social skills. Furthermore, their chances for socio-economic development is reduced and this in turn widens the inequality gap.

Solution

This project aims to create book clubs in 100 public secondary schools across Nigeria impacting 10,000 pupils from low income families. RETECH Foundation (RF) will provide, free, a rich supply of books to club members. RF will give an award, yearly, to the child who has read the most books and to the club which has met the most, in each school to encourage the pupils to read and review the books supplied. RF will encourage books rotation between clubs to ensure the programme is sustainable.

Long-Term Impact

This project will improve the literacy level of 10,000 pupils providing them with an opportunity to read widely and apply it practically for their development. It would improve their academic performance, emotional intelligence, social and management skills. This will, in the long term, improve their employability, thereby enabling them to rise above poverty and in turn provide for their family's health and well being. It will ultimately lead to a reduction of inequality in Nigeria.
