A Chance to Heal held a Body Project program at Germantown Friends School in Philadelphia, PA in May of this year. Thirteen girls participated in the program which consisted of interactive discussions about the origins of the "thin ideal"; exercises and role playing that dealt with real-life pressures to be thin and what girls can do to resist the "thin ideal." Other exercises focused on how to challenge body-related concerns, ways to respond to future pressures to be thin and how they might promote the "thin ideal" in what they do or say.
As a result, the girls were inspired to perform individual body activism activities. Some of the results included: leaving a note in a middle school classroom, “Dear ladies, you are beautiful just the way you are;” writing on a friend’s web page, “I love you as you are, don’t change;” writing with a dry erase marker on a bathroom wall, “You are beautiful.” Another participant said she would like to write an article about “No Fat Talk” in the school newspaper. Finally, one participant talked about how she will resist future pressures with her new motto: “keep the awareness awake.”
Over the next few months we have four more Body Projects scheduled both at camps this summer and schools in the fall. Thank you so much for your continued support!
