Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Jamaica as one of the strongest storms on record. Blue Atlas is conducting a needs assessment to guide community support, providing direct aid to farms and agricultural associations. The project includes infrastructure support- this looks like roofs and water catchment systems in the near term and technical guidance and support for climate-smart agriculture initiatives and aquaculture training.
Jamaica has been facing the severe impacts from Hurricane Melissa on many fronts, this includes the large demographic of backyard farms, commercial farms, aquaculture operations, and local food systems heavily damaged. Flooding and wind have destroyed infrastructure of towns, farms and business, while limiting access to food and water. Action is needed now to help continue the rebuilding efforts and support food sovereignty. Farmers and organizations are doing the hard part, our goal is to help.
The Blue Atlas Project continually works with the community to guide our targeted support; providing direct aid to farmers and ag associations. Our project provides staged relief in the means of basic supplies and funds to address immediate need insecurities and build towards sustainability. We just allocated our first round of SULA Grants, and the response has been humbling. So has your support. We are now looking to expand out partnerships to strategic farms who focus on community outreach.
SULA Grants support smallholder farmers and aquaculture producers with infrastructure, inputs, and technical guidance, helping restore and strengthen livelihoods. The FEAST Center network provides hands-on access in climate-smart agriculture and aquaculture, to communities and empowers them with the knowledge and skills to move forward better. Our aim is to work alongside those farms who help provide stable market access and educational outreach to become more sustainable and grow more food.
