Ocean wonders that Made an Impact

By Kellen Muthoni Mbungu | Project leader

1. Executive Summary

This project aims to contribute to ocean health restoration by reducing marine pollution, improving coastal ecosystems, and increasing community awareness on sustainable ocean practices. Through organized beach cleanups, waste segregation, community education, and monitoring, the project directly address plastic pollution while empowering local stakeholders to become long-term stewards of the ocean.

The project was implemented over three months in a selected coastal community and funded through donor contributions totaling USD 5,000.

2. Background and Problem Statement

Oceans are facing increasing threats from plastic waste, improper disposal of household garbage, and limited public awareness of marine conservation. Coastal communities are often the first affected, as waste accumulation harms marine life, fisheries, tourism, and public health.

This project responded to these challenges by combining practical action (coastal cleanup) with education and community engagement, ensuring both immediate and lasting impact.

3. Project Objectives

Overall Objective:

To improve ocean health in the target coastal area by reducing marine debris and strengthening community-led conservation efforts.

Specific Objectives:

Remove plastic and solid waste from the coastline.

Promote waste segregation and responsible disposal.

Increase awareness of ocean conservation among community members and youth.

Establish a simple monitoring system for continued coastal protection.

4. Project Activities

Coastal Cleanup Campaigns

Two large-scale beach cleanup events

Waste collection, sorting, and proper disposal

Community Awareness Workshops

Educational sessions on marine pollution and ocean health

Distribution of informational materials

Waste Segregation & Recycling Support

Provision of bins and sacks for sorted waste

Coordination with local recyclers

Monitoring and Documentation

Data collection on types and quantities of waste removed

Photo documentation and reporting to donors

5. Target Beneficiaries

Coastal community residents (approx. 200 people)

Local fishers and tourism operators

Youth and volunteers involved in conservation activities

6. Expected Outcomes

At least 500 kg of marine waste removed from the coastline

Improved awareness of ocean conservation among community members

Reduced littering and improved waste management practices

Strengthened local capacity for ongoing ocean protection

7. Project Duration

3 months

8. Monitoring and Evaluation

Pre- and post-cleanup waste assessments

Attendance records from workshops

Photo and activity reports

Final narrative and financial report shared with donors
