Dearest Friends and Supporters,
Thank you for your ongoing support of Dayspring Home which allows us to continue to improve the daily lives of our children here. These past few months have been busy, from Diwali to Christmas to Pongal, there has been lots to celebrate! All of which is possible through the generosity of our friends and supporters, for which we are immensely grateful.
Dayspring Home radiated joy and festive spirit during the past months as children and staff came together to celebrate the Hindu festival of Diwali, Christmas, and Pongal, a Tamil harvest festival. The festive season was marked by cultural performances, traditional decorations, and shared meals, creating a vibrant atmosphere that brought smiles to the faces of everyone involved.
This Diwali we had a wonderful time celebrating! Each of our girls enjoyed a celebratory meal and received a new special dress (as well as lots of sweets!). The four days of celebrations were filled with firecrackers and fireworks as we came together to celebrate the festival of lights, rejoicing over light overcoming darkness and the triumph of good over evil.
Christmas was also a special occasion for our girls at DaySpring! The house was full of Christmas spirit, decorations and lights. Christmas Day was filled with prayers, songs, dances and good food and with even a special surprise visit from Santa who distributed some gifts. The girls received presents that included sweets, chocolate, new shoes and new clothes thanks to the support of our individual donors and Caritas Linköping.
From the 13th to the 16th of January our Dayspring Home was filled with the warmth of tradition, joy and gratitude as we came together to celebrate Pongal! Pongal is a multi-day festivity celebrated here in Tamil Nadu to give thanks for a bountiful harvest. “Pongal” is also the name of the boiled sweet rice dish which is made and enjoyed during the festival. Moreover, during the day of Maatu Pongal, the kids celebrated cattle by painting their horns and placing garlands of flowers around their necks. This year was particularly festive as we welcomed the birth of a new calf!
Thanks to donations received through GlobalGiving and individual donors including volunteers, we have been able to purchase a new incinerator to burn used sanitary pads to replace the previous one which was damaged. As well as a new small toilet for our male caretaking and farming staff.
In addition, construction work to repair the floor is planned to start this month, which will be waterproof and thus improve the living situation of the girls, protecting them against leaks.
Volunteers also organised fundraising campaigns through which we were able to buy a new spacious fridge for the kitchen and new games, clothes, toiletries and stationery items for the children. Other small activities undertaken by volunteers included painting the doors and helping with practical tasks in the farm, both with the animals and in the crops.
During an initiative promoted by the Commerce Community Club (V.H.N.S.N. College), the girls at Dayspring had the chance to plant tree saplings and engage in a beautiful nature-related moment. The initiative aimed to promote environmental sustainability and foster a sense of responsibility towards nature.
