Dear Donors,
We are excited to share updates from the newest cohort of our BIPOC Sci-Fi Screenwriting Lab, a program dedicated to supporting screenwriters of color as they imagine bold, liberated futures through science fiction, Afrofuturism, and Indigenous futurism.
This new cohort officially launched with an orientation in December, where fellows were introduced to the program’s values, trauma-informed storytelling framework, and community agreements. Since then, the cohort has been steadily advancing through a rigorous and collaborative curriculum designed to strengthen both craft and confidence. Workshops to date have included Introduction to Trauma-Informed Storytelling, Community Agreements, and BIPOC Futurism, followed by in-depth sessions on World Building and Elements of Genre, Character and Theme, Five-Act and Alternative Story Structures, Series Structure, Types of Shows, and Beat Sheets, and Pitching.
We were also excited to welcome two new mentors - Lorena Lourenco and Kaith Karishma - who will support our screenwriters in the pursuit of a career in screenwriting.
Fellows have also participated in multiple co-writing sessions, creating space for peer feedback and accountability. The program has now entered its development and outlining phase, with fellows actively writing pilot outlines that will be developed into full television pilots in Phase two of the Lab. This next phase will culminate in a live table read in August, where professional actors will bring fellows’ scripts to life in front of an audience of community members and industry professionals.
Your continued support makes this work possible. By investing in the BIPOC Sci-Fi Screenwriting Lab, you are helping us sustain a space where emerging writers can grow, take creative risks, and prepare for long-term careers in film and television.
