Dear Donors,

Thank you for your generous support of Justice for My Sister’s BIPOC Sci-Fi Screenwriting Lab! We’re excited to share a brief update on our recent progress and the impact of your contribution.

We are currently offering Phase 2 of the program to the 5th cohort, with seven fellows receiving one-on-one mentorship to complete their original sci-fi pilot scripts. These writers are crafting stories about futures rooted in justice, liberation, and joy. Their stories center BIPOC voices and show us a version of ourselves we don’t often see in mainstream media.

We also recently completed our Special Edition of the Lab, where 20 alumni returned to develop proof-of-concept short scripts based on pilots they authored in earlier cohorts.

During our second annual Justice for My People Film Festival, participants of our Special Edition Lab took part in a pitch forum, presenting their projects to a panel of industry judges. Seven semifinalists were selected, and one filmmaker will be announced later this month to receive production support and mentorship through our Short Film Launchpad initiative. This short film will serve as a professional portfolio piece to help launch their career, and a roadmap to audiences seeking hope and promise of a liberated future during these politically bleak times. To receive updates on the Short Film Launchpad initiative and dates for our next film festival, click here to join our mailing list.

Justice for My People Film Festival was also a chance to celebrate our 10-year Anniversary. A highlight for us was when Dolore Huerta, labor icon and Justice for My Sister’s honorary Board member, addressed our filmmakers. She said: “ It takes a lot of courage to make films like the ones you are making. It’s so important to get these stories out there.”

In honor of the 10 years we’ve served our communities, we invite you to become a monthly donor for $10/month and help us support more filmmakers of color for years to come. Please visit our donation page to increase your impact.

Sincerely,
The Justice for My Sister Team
