Quarterly Progress Report: Book Bicycle Program

Introduction

At Alif Laila Book Bus Society, we believe that stories have the power to transform lives—especially when they are brought right to a child’s doorstep. Our Book Bicycle Program was created to reach deep into the heart of underserved communities, threading through narrow streets where no van or bus can go. While the start of 2025 brought internal demands that limited early outreach, the arrival of spring in March re-ignited our efforts—and the impact has been heartwarming.

This report highlights our activities, observations, challenges, and feedback gathered over the last three months, with a renewed appeal for your continued support to help us reach more children, more consistently.

January & February 2025: Internal Focus, External Pause

During January and February, the Book Bicycle activities were temporarily paused due to:

  • Heavy workload at the main office
  • Prioritized engagement of the Storyteller Bus, including puppet shows and stall-based reading sessions
  • Sorting and organizing thousands of books for upcoming outreach

Although we were not active in the field with the Book Bicycle during these two months, our team was actively preparing, organizing, and planning for a more impactful comeback in March.

March 2025: Resuming the Ride of Imagination

In March, we resumed Book Bicycle visits with enthusiasm. Three successful sessions were conducted:

Community Engagement Highlights

  • Each session had around 10 regular attendees, with 3–4 new children joining.
  • Parents expressed excitement and gratitude, eager to see more regular visits.
  • Children actively participated in storytelling, puppetry, and browsing through books.

Children's Voices: Why the Book Bicycle Matters

"Mujhay sab se zyada mazeed kahaniyan pasand hain! Agli dafa 'Jungle Ki Kahaniyan' laayen!"
Nida, Age 9, Street 34
("I love hearing more and more stories! Next time, please bring jungle stories!")

"Bicycle wali Library bohat achi lagti hai. Mere ghar ke bilkul paas aati hai!"
Ali, Age 7
("I love the Bicycle Library—it comes so close to my house!")

"The story about the moon and stars was my favorite. Can I take that book home next time?"
Zoya, Age 10

"Mujhe Urdu kahaniyan sun kar acha lagta hai. Angrezi mein mushkil hota hai."
Kashan, Age 8
("I enjoy stories in Urdu. English ones are difficult to understand.")

These sincere comments reflect a growing appetite for stories, especially in the local language. Our Book Bicycle isn’t just a mobile library—it’s a spark for imagination, comfort, and curiosity.

Challenges Faced

  • Staff Limitations: Due to parallel outreach programs like puppet shows and mobile library sessions, it was difficult to allocate team members exclusively for Book Bicycle.
  • Logistics: Narrow lanes and unpredictable weather posed mobility hurdles, requiring flexible planning.

Key Requirements Identified

  1. More Urdu Books: There's a clear demand for age-appropriate Urdu content.
  2. Comfortable Setup: A small floor mat is needed for outdoor reading to create a cozy space.

Upcoming Plans: April 2025 & Beyond

  • Twice-Weekly Visits: Every Thursday and Friday from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM
  • New Locations: Expansion into Sabeel Wali Gali, a densely populated area inaccessible to larger vehicles
  • Focused Interventions: Regular storytelling, interactive games, and surveys to collect more feedback

We are tailoring this phase to become more inclusive, localized, and interactive—reaching children where no conventional library can.

Appeal for Continued Support

Thanks to your generous support, we have been able to reinitiate and revive this deeply impactful initiative. With your continued partnership, we can:

  • Double our frequency of visits
  • Invest in more Urdu-language books
  • Hire part-time local staff or volunteers to assist with storytelling
  • Purchase essential items like a rug, a book cart, and rain covers for books

Your support is not just funding a program—it’s nurturing dreams, building readers, and empowering futures.

Conclusion

From the quiet smiles during a read-aloud to the claps of laughter during a puppet show, March reminded us of the powerful impact of presence. The Book Bicycle Program is back on track—and ready to grow. With your help, it can roll even farther.

Let’s keep the wheels of imagination turning.
Together, we can make every street a storybook.
