We launched field operations in Benin in September 2021 with the organization of a workshop gathering all stakeholders in Alibori: teachers, pedagogical advisors, parents' representatives, traditional and religious authorities, social workers, development NGOs, children, etc. At the end of these workshops, the participants had validated the project's problematic and precisely defined their expectations.
The pedagogical guides and teacher kits were developed based on the results of this field workshop. These tools were used to train 20 pedagogical advisors and 20 social workers from the department. They trained themselves 400 teachers and raised awareness among 960 parents.
An external evaluation shows encouraging results. Through a series of observations and interviews, it found that the project is already leading to awareness and positive changes in behavior:
"Teachers' pedagogical practices are actually improving and classes are becoming more and more enjoyable for students."
"The parents are receptive, when they are touched, they become aware and progressively initiate changes in their households, starting with the involvement of the boy in the household chores or the more equitable redistribution of these chores between the girl and boy children.
Example of beneficiaries' testimony:
Parents
"I believe that it is a great awareness that was conducted. It mainly concerned the issues that parents are unable to discuss with their children, that is to say, sexuality, especially during adolescence, where it is a taboo subject that parents do not like to discuss with their children and at some point, children are taught by the street, by social networks, and it always goes astray. With what we have taken in this training, I believe that if parents become aware and from all those who have been invited, the imams, the parents who have become aware to attend this kind of session, I believe that if we all get together hand in hand to do awareness sessions for example, disseminate the information received. I believe that many girls will have the chance to evolve in their school and not to become pregnant at a very young age and from the boys as well, those who have understood what the parents are saying, I believe that they will pull themselves together and I believe that our society will win.”- A Parent
Teachers
"It saves us from many things, because before [...], if you hit the child and then saw the child coming with the parent, we were stressed [...]. Now, with Graines de Paix, we know what we are going to do, so we feel even. And the children themselves are at ease, they are at ease and they entrust things to you freely, whereas before there was fear, even if they knew something, they kept silent for fear. So Graines de Paix does a lot, sincerely it does a lot.” – A Teacher
The following step of this program is to produce a series of awareness-raising videos and display these through the media, and then to extend the training to more teachers, enabling yet more children, girls and boys to benefit.
