Since 1927, Berkeley Humane has served the people and animals of our community by providing life-saving programs for cats and dogs, cultivating compassion, and strengthening the human-animal bond. We rescue and place homeless animals into well-matched, loving homes, but not before providing individualized medical care and attention. As an independent, non-profit organization, we rely on the public's support to fund our life-saving mission.
Animal overpopulation is a widespread issue that can result in the euthanasia of healthy, adoptable pets. Berkeley Humane partners with overcrowded and under-resourced municipal shelters in the East Bay by intaking our animals from them, helping to alleviate the strain on those shelters and finding loving homes for even more animals. We also work to prevent animals from entering the shelter system by providing community programs that support pet owners.
Since we are not funded by the government or any national/regional organizations, for decades we have relied on the public's support in order to accomplish our life-saving mission. With the funding of our community, we are able to address the growing pet overpopulation by intaking, caring for, treating, and finally placing homeless animals into a well-matched, loving homes. The more funding we receive, the more times we can provide SECOND CHANCES to dogs and cats who desperately need our help.
Because the well-being of animals reflects the well-being of our community, we engage minds, hearts and hands to provide care for dogs and cats in the East Bay. Our community programs aim to reduce the number of dogs and cats who enter the shelter system in the first place, and each year we help 1,000+ homeless animals recover from physical and emotional trauma, and place them with loving caregivers so they have an opportunity to live a happy life.
