On Tuesday August 4, two explosions took place in a warehouse in the port of Beirut, causing death, injury, and destruction of homes. Many are seeking emergency support. Through our community-led approach, our teams are responding immediately with relief for survivors, including food, hygiene kits, masks to protect from toxic fumes, and transit for families to reach shelter outside of Beirut.
At least 113 people have died and at least 300,000 people have been made homeless due to extreme damages caused to buildings. Concerns have risen over the toxic fumes left lingering over the city. Lebanon is already in the midst of the worst economic crisis in decades, with tens of thousands of people experiencing poverty, while also facing the COVID-19 pandemic.
Through our signature community-led approach, our teams are responding immediately. We're providing critical supplies like food, hygiene kits, face masks to protect from toxic fumes, transportation for families to reach shelter outside of Beirut, and reconstruction of damaged windows and doors. ActionAid is working with local partners ABAAD and RDFL to assess further needs within the next 24 hours.
ActionAid's response is community-driven, women-led, and rights-based, which means your donation today invests in change that lasts. Your gift helps us respond to this crisis, sustains long-term disaster preparedness, and supports human rights around the world.
