ABCs and Rice is a school that provides free education, food, medical and dental care for 280 needy children and their families. The school provides supplies, clothes, uniforms and health care for these children aged 4 to 16. In addition, the school grows much of its produce and operates a medical outreach program including dental. ABCs and Rice is a beacon of hope for the children of Cambodia. It is a place where they can learn, grow, and thrive.
Cambodia is a country where many people live in extreme poverty. More than 40% of the population lives on less than $2 a day, and 90% of the poor live in rural areas. Female-headed households are amongst the poorest and these Cambodians have an average of 5.1 years of education. The situation is further exacerbated by high levels of malnutrition and food insecurity.
ABCs and Rice recognizes education as a basic human right and understands it to be the key to breaking the cycle of poverty. The school takes a holistic view of education and community empowerment. ABCs provides nutritious meals, family food rations, and medical, dental, and social services to the families in its care. We are more than just a school, we are a community that cares.
The potential long-term impact of our work is immense. By providing free education, food, medical and dental care, ABCs is helping to break the cycle of poverty that plagues Cambodia. Education is a basic human right and by providing it, we are giving them the tools needed to succeed in life. Food programs are helping to combat malnutrition and ensure that children are healthy and well-fed. While medical and dental care helps to ensure that the children are healthy and able to attend class.
